I know WHY we wont have flying cars.

Ok, how many of you are wondering as to WHEN in the next 5 years will we get our Flying Cars as seen in Back To The Future Part II?

It is one of those things when doing a film or series set in the future.
- Back to the Future Part II was set in 2015
- Space 1999 was set, obviously, in 1999.
- Jetsons also was set in 1999.
- Judgement Day was supposed to be in 1997.
- 2001 and 2010 were both misses too.
- Star Trek, if memory serves, we should have First Contact and Warp Drives in under half a century.
- X-Men is set in the "not-too-distant future" with the World Trade Centre in the background.

It's rare for a movie to be set in the future and get it right. It's all good. We still like sci-fi and time-travel.
But let's get back to our flying cars.

At the end of Back To The Future, we watch Marty and the Doc take off in the DeLorean, which was modified for use in the future.
During the events of Back To The Future Part II we discover that flying cars are the way of the future. Technology is superior to what it is today (although nobody seems to have mobiles and faxes are still used)
Rocker Marty McFly has become a pathetic business-man who gets fired. His girlfriend (from the 80's who is locked in a closet in the future) sees a fax come through saying "You're Fired" and keeps it, and this is AFTER hearing that Marty was in a car crash as a teenager, broke his arm, and gave up his music.

At the end of Back To The Future part III we see the events where Marty gets to race Flea and he decides NOT to race him.
Thus he doesn't end up in a car crash, he doesn't give up his music, and his music evidentally has a REVERSE "Wyld Stallions" effect causing technology to hault in the flying car technology, and instead pumping that research into 3D tv's, mobile phones and iTunes devices.

So if you want your flying car, you shall have to arrange for Marty to crash his car.

BTW, Randall had it wrong. The Jetsons didn't promise we'd have flying cars by now (1994) as it was set in 2062.

I completely agree, I drive all day everyday for work and the amount of muppets that are on the road, I would be scared if the started to fly...and I really don't want a flying car, all I want is a hover board or the Greys Sports Almanac....

I'd like those stepping disks from Ringworld (Larry Niven). (it's like the ST teleporter, but much much more portable, in fact you can carry a bunch in your backpack). Just think of the possibilities.... no using a grotty public toilet...

A mate of mine works as an air traffic controller at Tullamarine. He said the reason we will never have flying cars is because people are stupid enough in vehicles that are already on the ground. Can you imagine the carnage if peak hour was taken 3 dimensionally?

I agree with Baralier's air traffic controller friend..it could get rather hectic. Hopefully a guidance system would take away the human error factor. Interesting, though.

A personal transporter would be the ultimate form of transport. Fun to think about!

A lack of air traffic control would weed out the weak and slow, leaving us ninja finger'd playstation generation in the skies... I say this purely as justification for many hours of console gaming. In addition, I would be the only one allowed to have Air to Air missiles, because I cant stand people cutting me off. Oh how things will be different when I'm in charge
