Costuming ???'s
Ok no idea if other than those I know and Troop with, there are any costumers on here and more importantly female ones.
I have just finished my first costume and putting together my Kit to take with me to cons both here and interstate and international.
Other than the basics - Custume parts, sewing kit with matching threads safety pins, dress making pins, tape measure, scissors, basic makeup (costumes i have and are working on don't need much in the way of make-up) contacts, hair products - pins, bands, hairspray, hairpieces. Can anyone suggest what else i should have in this kit.
Will post pics of costume once i have it on my computer. Female Rebel (X-Wing) Pilot woohoo (ok sorry but most of my mates just don't get it)

Yep, I costume a lot. Can honestly say that I haven't worn a costume (per say) to a con...but I did used to dress as goth...so... :0)
Sounds like you have the basics covered. I have been known to take along some 'patch' fabric if I think that the costume has a chance of needing one (say, the 9 year old dressed in Glenda the good witch costume...tons of delicate fabric).
If I think of anything else I will reply again... :0D

Re: Costuming ???'s
Yeah long time costumer here (and former committee member of the Australian Costumers' Guild).
I used to costume a lot more but lack of funds and general apathy kept me away from the sewing machine for a number of years. Thankfully our gracious Prime Minister sent me some bucks so I could waste it on fabric
Recently finished a Victorian era inspired military uniform. Well I say finished as it's wearable but I still want to continue with the embellishments.
The mechanical hand needs reworking but that may be a long term project.

Hey Baralier,
Where are you located and do you know if there is much of a chapter of The Costumers Guild in Victoria.
I moved to Melbourne from Adelaide (better job prospects) only to find the larger guild chapter was back in my home town
Any reccomendations on who I would contact in Victoria?

Re: Costuming ???'s
The Guild started in Melbourne and was based here until about 2003. Sadly most of the original drivers of the Vic group have gone and had families or moved on to other things. Some I haven't seen in probably that long.
At this stage there's no Melbourne chapter, though if enough people can get together that could be fixed.
I think the biggest problem is events to show off costumes have dropped off. Most SF cons used to have a Masquerade. Conventions in Melbourne don't seem to be as frequent and those that do happen rarely have any sort of costume section.
I know the burnout of organisation did get to a few people, but sadly most groups seem to suffer from lots of passengers and not enough rowers.

Bummer. Would have been cool if there was still a group going. I can fully understand what you mean about passengers vs rowers.
Needs to be a group effort indeed.

Re: Costuming ???'s
Whilst I have not worn a costume before, per-say, I have dressed in a suspiciously similar style to the ninth Doctor to promote the Doctor Who Club of Victoria at various conventions. The effect may have been somewhat spoiled by a fourth Doctor scarf, but I am there for the club and to get noticed not to be in character.
To that end, our Treasurer who has started her own costuming business, is in the process of making me some time lord robes - based on stylings of the Master's robes in the 1996 TVM. This is not cosplay as I am not in character or trying to be authentic, its a shameless attempt at getting the club noticed. That and I can embarrass the rest of the committee who plan to distance themselves from me!
We did plan to have it ready for the Paul McGann convention, but as I need to work most that day I may as well give it its first airing at the Supanova convention.

Re: Costuming ???'s
I'll throw this in as a slight tangent here but I'm interested by the appearance of the word "cosplay". My own use (and understanding) of the word cosplay is that of recreating a specific character, usually from Anime. I know I've argued, seemingly unsuccessfully, that cosplay and costuming are two different things that share some similarities but I wondered what other people thought.
Do you use cosplay and costuming interchangeably? And if so would you be game to call an American Civil War Re-enactor a cosplayer (to their face)?

Re: Costuming ???'s
I would agree that cosplay is recreating a specific character by imitated actions as well as dress, for purposes of competition and re-enactment of event/scene/known mannerisms.
So the Civil War re-enactors and the Medieval re-enactors are cosplayers and yes I think that the two are similar but different. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but that was my understanding.

Re: Costuming ???'s
Nope. I think you both have it right. Although to me Cosplay is more along the lines of anime or manga characters (they seem to be the bulk of it in any case).
Costuming covers basically everything and anything you do in a costume I guess.

Re: Costuming ???'s
If you check out Legendary Costuming and Sewing Inc's Photos - Master's Robes on Facebook, you can see Kerry's work on my costume. She needed to rush a little to get it done for the convention, so the collar on both the tunic and robe need a little piping to give it lift, and the cord needs shortening, but its essentially finished.

I love it, and am already thinking how she can top it; maybe the clockwork men from Girl in the Fireplace (Doctor Who), or a dress uniform jacket (white) from Star Trek.

I posed with R2 at Manifest last year
I saw sooooo many people getting their photo taken in front of the blast doors with all of you in costume at Supanova!
How long did it take you guys to set them up?
