Supanova in Melbourne

Post by Grenge on Tue Feb 23, 2010 7:31 pm

Due to the lack of decent guests that I would want to see at the Sydney Supanova, I'm considering travelling to Melbourne to go there. I might also get my wife to come along. It would be her first con, I'm slowly converting her to a geek.

We will probably try to make it a week away with the family. Any Melbourne people have any suggestions as to what area would be good to stay in (probably a cabin in a caravan park). Also wondering if there is anything interesting to take the kids to in Melbourne?

Not really up on Accommodation, but attraction-wise, the Melbourne Zoo and Aquarium are both cool ( I've been told the Aquarium is cool - I haven't actually been). I love the zoo, and there's a new baby elephant.

There's also the nightly flame jets at Southbank - they're fun Smile

Melbourne Museum has a bunch of geeky stuff - I've loved going there since I was a kid.

Will keep working on other fun things to do.

agree the aquarium is good, but $$$ for the small amount time it takes to go through. The new aquatic enclosure in the Melbourne Zoo ir very good. Best coffee in the zoo is just inside the front gate.

scienceworks in Williamstown is pretty good for the inner kid. Williamstown is worth a strole and fish and chips by the waterfront (bring a jumper). going to the top of eureka tower is much like Sydneys Centerpoint (just as cool), but we had to take down our Ferris Wheel, someone forgot to tell the engineer it gets hot inMelbourne.

there are a few botique backpackers in the city that apparently arn't too expensive. The Nunnery comes to mind. Puts you right in the middle of town and close enough to Lygon Streen and Carlton for all the good food you could want.

if you be a coffee addict, I know all the places

Thanks for the replys, but unfortunately it looks like we won't be able to make the trip down after all.

Hopefully there will be more guests join the Sydney con, at least Felicia Day will be there. (damn, no drooling smilies here either)

Can I get you all to like, totally big me up around Alessandra? You know, intelligent, lion-tamer, pulled out of med-school at 17 to do charity work, cuz she's my #1 in the list of hot sci-fi chicks.

For the record, i wouldn't actually do that.

Well after taking the missus to her first Supanova I think the quote of the day would be.

Her: "gee, where else would it seem totally normal to see a woman in a blood stained nightie, manga hair and a really big gun walk out of the ladies room!"

Me: "I know, excellent isn't it!"

*slap*

I only made it to Supanova on the Sunday but I had a great time.
I loved catching up with friends, making new friends, and meeting celebs
Got a kiss each from James Marsters and Gareth-David Lloyd, so I'm a very happy lass
They go nicely with the kiss from Corin Nemec I got on Thursday at the dinner

My big regret is that forgot to take my sketchbook with me
I love getting commissions from as many of the talented artists as possible at each event I go to and I forgot this time... noooooooo!

Found it interesting to do podcast interviews on the floor as it's not something I've tried to do before. Since we had absolutely no time to do the podcast any other way we figured we'd try this out... which was funny and harder than expected when peope geek-out completely off-topic lmao!

Loved the costumes as always
I'm always so impressed by the talent!
Even saw a pair of Blink Angels!!!
I will have to find some time to put up some photos!

I did find myself caught rather off guard, having nothing prepared and my mind elsewhere; that said, I am pleased to hearing the sound of my voice at the best of time, so hearing myself talk in a podcast made me smile. Actually, I really enjoyed hearing all these people I knew talking. Having a community like this is why I entered fandom. Scotty was quite right how we all know each other as enough of us go to multiple clubs.

I worked at the DWCV table for two days, the first half of day one with barely any merchandise or supplies as everything ended up being stuck in Geelong, which did set us back a bit. That said, we recovered and ended up getting nine brand new members, with a few more planning to join via paypal (so they claimed). We ended up with two silver class members, two families, and five traditional members, we left happy enough. We did not cover the cost of the table though, which is a pity. That said, I never expected to recover $265. We did manage to sell some merchandise, though, which did help.

As for the convention itself, I did not take part in any of the activities as I stayed mostly at the table. The second day I did wander around, showing off my time lord robes as Kerry (the lady who made them) dragged me off to get a group photo with the chap who played Ianto then presented me to everybody she knew. I rather enjoyed my time, talking to all the people I recognise from other conventions, though from whom I would actually run a mile should I meet them in life ;-)

I have uploaded some photos on Facebook, the album should be public from this link
