What is your favourite RPG?
My name is mysticalmum and I'm a mage in WoW
I am not a WoW addict, just a devotee! My son nagged and nagged me stupid to join him in WoW - so I succumbed and .... it's pretty cool!
I'd be interested to hear what other geekies are into. My son is really into EVE Online but it's a bit OTT for me!

Re: What is your favourite RPG?
I love online RPGs but I so rarely get to spend the amount of time on them that I'd like to
I've played around on WoW but not in ages.
I tend to play an MMORPG for a little while and then get bored and move on to the next one
I'm pretty sure my first MMO was Wyvern, and I met some really fun people through that. It doesn't exist anymore though
I've also messed around with Ragnarok, Gate To Heavens, Anarchy Online, Flyff, Rappelz, Guild Wars, City Of Heroes... and probably a couple I've forgotten!
I really enjoyed doing the beta testing for Rappelz and miss my guildies from the release.
I'm just about to cancel my City Of Heroes account because I'm just not getting the time to play
I was hoping that CoH would keep my superheroic needs undercontrol until DC or Marvel released an offical MMO but it's taking far longer than anyone hoped.
Do you play other types of RPGs?
I use to do live role playing through a few different clubs, but haven't in ages (and there's a Stargate event on this weekend that I'm missing!), but I started playing tabletop rpgs when I was eight and I never plan to stop
I'm currently in a Star Wars game and it's one of the most fun games I've ever been in! Everyone just has fun and jokes as we try to make our characters last one more seesion without our own stupidity killing us off LOL
I've played in more titles of TTRPGs than I think I could list but I would say my favourites are Mutants and Masterminds, In Nomine, Castle Falkenstein, Vampire: TM, and CyberGen. I also have a soft spot for the original Marvel (MSHRPG) and it's FASERIP system
I knew that system by heart!!! Of course D&D is always fun too

Thanks for your reply, you've given me ideas of other RPG's to try out
WoW is the only one I've gotten into. I'm actually more into first person shooters such as Doom, an oldie but still a goodie! I have Doom on the 360 and it's awesome!

I've only just got back into TTRPS after 16 years and am enjoying M&M as I frantically try to learn it in my spair time, while trying to keep my Jedi alive in the Star Wars game xombiekitty mentioned. But in my High school years realy enjoyed Cyberpunk and Cybergen, D&D was also alot of fun. Oh and can't forget Carwars.

I really enjoyed playing D&D with my friends who introduced me to it just a few years ago (yes I am living under a rock). I was never very good at it and always needed guidence (please forgive me!). But my favourite RPG of all times is MERP! Yes it is a bit dated now and it can be very complex, but still very fun!!!

(Maybe we can play Car Wars when Darth Sully abandons us for Celebration V later this year?)

did anyone play a RPG called Paranoia? I remember it from the 90's, it was very very twisted and yet fun, a sort of 1984 meets Alice in Wonderland.
I also had a guilty pleasure for TMNT the RPG, still have the books.. a great read if nothing else these days.

Paranoia actually DID a 1984 meets Alice in Wonderland (meets Cyberpunk) adventure called "Through The Mirrorshades"
TMNT regularly polls as one of the greatest RPG's of all time. It's also notable because the core rulebook contains an original Eastman/Laird TMNT comic that wasn't available anywhere else.

I've never been huge on online RPGs, but I love the Final Fantasy series of games on the playstation and ps2.
Tabletop wise, I've played a lot of systems, but among my favourites would have to be the new 4th ed. D&D (words I never thought I would say about a D&D game system) and Deadlands, which is an underrated but superb system.

Which version of Deadlands? The original or the D20?
I've heard nothing but good things about Don't Rest Your Head - should take a look at it myself.
Online & console-wise, I don't play a hell of a lot. Slowly working my way through Ghostbusters on PS3, but I never played any of the Final Fantasy or Zelda series. Do Police Quest on PC or Transylvania on Apple ][e count? I think they're the last games I finished.

Oooh I <3 early Final Fantasy!!!
It's very pretty in the later games but I haven't played much of those ones.
I would like to give them a go though
LOL @ Police Quest!
I love all those Sierra adventure games... Space Quest, Kings Quest, etc... oh & good ol' Leisure Suit Larry!!!

Original Deadlands system, with the different dice for everything. It was a hoot, we had a great time.
Don't Rest Your Head will depend on a player on anxiety treatment, we don't want to accidentally put her back. RPGs can get intense.

The later games are gorgeous. They have some dud spots, but if you're going to play one, I would have to suggest FF9. It is exquisite, possibly the prettiest game I've ever seen.

I am a geeks geek. Been working in IT for over 25 years, playing about 8 online games at the moment. I play Rappelz and LastChaos. Used to play WoW but refuse to keep paying monthly fees so I stopped. Also play a text based game called Utopia that I have been playing for over 10 years now. At lunchtime, I usually have 5 games all running at the same time so I can jump from one to the other.

Have dabbled in my online game, but lately I'm been looking to getting into 'LARP'ing. so that should be alot of fun, theres a group that meets not too far from me, so I'm going to look into that.
Allows me to be melodramatic, and have exercise at the same time, and I love that.

I would say my fav RPG is the one I am playing now which is Z.O.E or Zone Of The Enders: The 2nd Runner. It was made by the same people that made Metal Gear Solid 2:Sons of Liberty. It has fast combat and epic story telling.

Re: What is your favourite RPG?
I started out when I was 10 playing Tunnels and Trolls, then moved on to Dungeons and Dragons and Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.
Have not played the latest versions of AD&D just 2nd edition.
I've also played Villains and Vigilantes, Champions and Powers and Perils.
Haven't played anything recently though.
Still. That's playing as a group. I do enjoy Oblivion on PS3 or PC and when I get a better deal with my broadband I'll probably join an online game as well.
I still remember my 1st character a Dwarf named Ivan Barreltorso.... crushed to death by a dropping block of roofing trap after 30 minutes of playing!!!!
Best character I've enjoyed would have to be Svenn.. Barabarian of Infinite Proportion. Intelligence of 5 but the body of a Superhero. I used to do a Schwartzenegger accent with him all the time.

IMHO, 3.5 was the best version. I still prefer it over 4.0.

Nope. Only AD&D 2.5 I think it was. Before they came in with all the little extra fiddly bits.

Was going though some archive boxes and found amongst the pile of 2000AD comics and some old AD&D and D&D box sets, my first ever solo RPG. I think my mother was considering therapy
I was mid 80's I reacall and funny, in a chainsaw horror kind of way. Must have a few drinks one night and see if I can save New York in 60 minutes again.

LOL!! Cool.
I also played a few games of Killer. We would run around a local trash and treasure market we worked at trying to assassinate each other. Even got one of the vendors involved by getting him to sell cans of coke to my friends with a little dot on the bottom. If the dot was not removed by them 1st and they drank then they were declared poisoned.

Re: What is your favourite RPG?
Okay, I haven't replied to this earlier because I needed a bit of time to type it out (not compatible with the Iphone)...so here I go:
I first started to RPG at age 11 when my year 6 teacher brought in his box set of D&D. Yes, Mr Yukubic was really that cool! He thought that the game was a good way of getting the kids interested in working as groups. He was correct. Anyway, when I went up to Jr High School (years 7-9) I moved to a different area, so I was very very lucky to find a group of geeks to hang with and continue my D&D adventures.
In High School (years 10-12) I wasn't allowed to play RPG's because I had to work on my grade point average (4.0 of course, but that didn't make any difference to my parents...no gaming!). Okay, so I was sneaky and kept playing at school.
My gaming groups changed throughout University but it was the same game system. Not until I was 22 did I get introduced to other games. Since then I have have played Vampire (and associated games Mage, Werewolf...), Witch, Paranoia, Aliens, and the like.
It was 1991 when I started playing Shadowrun (people who know me, know that this is my very favorite RPG).
I was concerned when I moved to Australia in 1997. Would I find a gaming group? No worries, Mate. You guys in the Southlands rock when it comes to gaming!
So my gaming group (there are normally 7 or 8 of us at the table and there are 10 or so of us) play a large number of RPG's. Currently we play L5R, LoTR, D&D, Star Wars, and , of course, SR! Lots of SR.
As for online games, I play on LoTRO.

Ooooh yeah. Though my favourite ever was not an RPG of Paranoia but a Freeform (or LARP as kids today call it). It was bureaucracy at its finest - the aim was to acquire a laser pistol permit. But if you didn't have an application to apply for a laser pistol permit first "Please report to termination centre." And someone comes along while you're waiting in the queue and offers you smarties? "Do you have red level clearance citizen?" Back you go. And then you noticed the coloured tape that had been laid out over the floor in places. Make sure you walked around it not over it.
Fun

Re: What is your favourite RPG?
As for favourites, never been much of one for online gaming. I did drop in to Second Life for a look about four years ago and am still there, it's not an RPG in the sense of being able to "win", though there are groups in SL that do roleplay.
I think my favourite RPG is still Castle Falkenstein. 19th century fantasy and played with cards not dice. Was part of a Falkenstein PBM for a while too.
Over the years I've played countless games. Starting with D&D then onto AD&D then being introduced to things like Traveller, Space Opera, Tunnels & Trolls, Elfquest, Runemaster, Call of Cthulhu, Role Master, Vampire: The Masquerade, Ars Magica, Pendragon, Talislantia, and Star Wars. I don't think I've played an RPG for about 7 or so year and the Star Wars d20 was the last thing I was involved with.

Wow...you haven't played a RPG in seven years!?! I play twice a week and think that I might not make it to the next game (from time to time). It's not an addiction, it's a desire to see my friends...and I am sticking to that statement! :0D
I had forgotten about Castle Falkenstein. I had a friend many years back who was the queen of the castle (every time we got together she wanted to play...which was fine with me). I may have to go find my CF stuff now... hmm...wonder where it is. :0)

Re: What is your favourite RPG?
When I was living in N.Z. I played a game called flashng blades. It was set in Paris and France in the time of King Louie. You had to fight your way to either riches through either spying or assasinations. Your other option was to join the royal guard as a muskateer. It was also a great game for scoring it was based on 2 D10. It was also true to the era, there was no magic, so you didn't heal from an injury in 1 turn. My character got a scar on his face which made him mor sexy.
Another Good game I played (I can't remember the name) was based on star trek space craft. It involved all the races from romulon to Vulcan to federatin, and even Andorians. I made the mistake of playing without reading the rules through and died quite quickly.

Re: What is your favourite RPG?
Wow brought back some great memories just reading all of your posts.
Much like yourself Super I played D&D and then went on to AD&D (2nd ed) when it was released. I played with a group of school mates twice weekly for almost 7 years. I absolutely love the world of Faerun in the Forgotten Realms format that we played. It was shortly after we began playing D&D that we realised there were RPG games for the computer...hmm thinking it would have been an early IBM! Once I began my quest for the 'Pools of Radiance' I was hooked. Baldurs Gate, Eye of the beholder and too many more to mention were some of my early RPG's. Neverwinter Nights, the new Pools of Radiance, Dragon Age. Dungeon Siege are some of the titles I have played over the previous years and enjoyed.
At present I play WoW though once you have levelled your first character to the maximum level (which I have 6 of >.<) a lot of the magic fades from the game. I have had a look a AION which is an aesthetically beautiful game to play though one pay to play game is enough.
On the PS3 console Oblivion was amazing. Fallout and it's expansions were awesome. Currently grinding through FF XIII which I have to say while being the most beautiful game I have seen on the PS3 is a bit of a let down. I have been a huge fan of Final Fantasy since FF IV. It's a shame the games format has not evolved so well. Borderlands was a bit of no brainer fun.
I actually subscribe to a RPG forum here in Melbourne, Australia. were people will post when the need a member for a particular PRG, yes people it's pens and dice! One day I will find the time to reply to one of these requests for some good old fashioned AD&D or any of the platforms people are playing, dust of the die and get back to the game I love.

Re: What is your favourite RPG?
A friend put me on to a show by the name of 'The Guild'. No idea if any of you are familiar with it or not but it is a hilarious sitcom based on the lives of online gamers.
It has since ran 3 series. This is the utube link for the 1st episode, they only go for 5-8 minutes each so worth a look. I think I watched the first 2 series back to back

Not sure if this is the most appropriate place for this but it is about RPG's and online games so maybe I can sneak it through.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
