Songwriters and words

Post by Anestis on Sat Jan 22, 2011 2:04 pm

So the radio was on as I was driving today and I heard a song by a band I'd never heard of.

Don't ask ne to name the band or song as I've forgotten.

Anyway, I was enjoying the song and the mood of it, up until the following line brought me to reality and put me off the song:

There's no way I'm not going to hurt you".

So, semantically I know what it means, but in reality the double negative means he will hurt the person, and that's just a horrid thought. Did the writer think about what he was writing and how it would come across?

Another one is a tautology in "Moonlight Shadow". I love the song, but thefollowing line always makes me shake my head:

It's four a.m. in the morning...

Really? What's wrong with "It's four o'clock in the morning..."

Anyway, just thought I'd share!

Nothing makes me feel old like picking apart popular music. Very Happy I have even been known to say "What the hell is this noise. It's definately not music." roflmao

One that always made me laugh at the stupidity of lyrics was the song by Shaggy "It Wasn't Me".
So Shaggys friend comes to him and says that his girlfriend caught him, in his house, having sex with the neighbour on the bathroom floor. So what should he do Shaggy?
"Just tell her it wasn't you" Rolling Eyes I'm surprised his head doesn't explode from all that brain power. Laughing

Another candidate for sheer stupidity is the Supertramp song "Take a Look At My Girlfriend".
"Take a look at my girlfriend
She's the only one I got
Not much of a girlfriend
Never seem to get a lot"
Gee, maybe the reason you don't get any is because you wrote a song bitching about her.

And on the other hand that "The Boy Does Nothing" song.
"Does he wash up? Never wash up
Does he clean up? No, he never cleans up
Does he brush up? Never brushed up
He does nothing the boy does nothing"
Here's a hint missy, if you keep carrying on and telling him he does nothing, he will do nothing just to prove you right.

I'm just waiting for somebody to jump in with "in my day, we listened to music on wax cylinders, and we liked it!"

in my day, we listened to music on wax cylinders, and we liked it!

And the small ones revolved at 45 rpm!

Ear WAX, LUXURY.... we used to have to lick the gramophone with our tongues and then our father would cut us in two with a stylus....

I would llike to put forward the Red Hot Chili Peppers with the well thought out lyric.

"Use my pants for everything but steering"

Another one I have been hearing too much on the radio ATM,
So Rihanna wants to be treated like she is the Only Girl In The World? Did she think that through?
Only girl in the world implies there is no other choice, so he might as well put up with her.
