DC Universe Online

Post by xombiekitty on Wed Jan 12, 2011 4:07 am

I have been dying for this to be released for the longest time!!!
We played the PS3 Beta thanks to Anestis being kind enough to give us his code (Thanks a bundle, Anestis!)

Today it was released and we're playing on PC Very Happy
ZenBubble has already made two characters and is happily playing.
I'm a gig away from finishing the patch and being able to start!

Who will be jumping onboard with us for some Chaotic Geek DCUO MMO insanity?!

I know Anestis will be playing on PC too! Very Happy
Alas, ctudball will be on PS3 Sad

Anyone interested in playing along with us, let me know!
I can't wait to see CGers in there Very Happy

I would love to play, but unfortunately I have a problem with most MMOs. I don't like having to pay a monthly fee to play a game, when I have a hard enough time getting time to play it anyway.
I would probably like to play DCUO the most of any MMO, but time and money are the only problems.
I am curious about the characters in the game. Do you only play as original characters or are you able to play as part of existing groups such as a Green Lantern?

All the DC Characters are reserved or are NPC's.
You create your own hero, either from scratch or inspired by an existing hero.
You can't be a GL, but they hint that this may change in an expansion.

ZenBubble & I have found it hard to maintain a consistent amount of time in MMOs before, as our free time often varies quite significantly.
As long as we enjoy the game during the first month (which I'm pretty sure we will since we enjoyed the Beta whenever it was actually up and running) we'll look at paying the one off lifetime fee to avoid feeling we're losing money during our lower level free time periods Very Happy

Some Beta pre-orders and some collection editions offer DC character options for PVP. Not sure on the full details on this as I'm not a PVP sort.

So far I've made up two of my TTRPG characters to run around DCUO as Very Happy

So today I upgraded my power supply, so I could put in my new video card so I can play. I got a copy of the game of my nephew so I didn't have to download the 14GB game, now it is installed, set up my account and then there is another 4GB of patches to download. Sad
If only I could spend the time creating my character while patches download.

Well, it took most of the day, but it got all patched up and ready to play. Created my character, and even got the name I wanted Surprised , and almost got to the end of the initial level. Then the server went down for maintenance. Sad
My first character is on a different server (Brave New World) but I will make another character to play on the Darkness Falls server tomorrow.

How much bandwidth does it use per month to pay?

I could get it on either PS3 or PC but don't want to chew through my 10gig.

SuperWannabe, if you buy a digital version & have to download the entire amount it will use more than 10gig just in the download.
If you buy a disc from a store, you will use approximately half your monthly allotment in the patches.
The longer you leave it, the more patches it will need.

As for how much it uses per month, no one can answer that for you.
Depending on how often you play, how long you play each time, how often there are new patches, and how big each new patch is, will determine the amount used.

May I ask what you're paying per month for 10gig?
You may very well be able to get a better deal and avoid your concerns regarding limits.
Any MMO you want to play is likely to have a large download to begin with that your current download limits may be an issue for.
Also, without knowing how much of your current plan you use per month, I can't even begin to guess how well it will fit with your plan.

You don't need to pay for the first month ...

I've made a bunch of characters. best of all I got the following Ccharacter names:

The Maxx
PheonixDarkDirk.

(points to anybody who gets the references)

Still haven't played either character yet, but I will one day. Zenbubble (the character) is up to lvl 11 as of last night, and I'll probably keep going til she maxes out at 30 and then I'll need other people to go raiding with.

The game wouldn't let me play without a subscription. I thought it was odd, but it will not update, saying I need to have a subscription, which then takes me to the DCUO subscription site to pay for it.

Just looked again - ARGH. Doing it through the game makes it look like you have to pay now instead of paying at the end of the first month. The SOE Station website was much clearer.

So tonight, updates. Tomorrow, saving (or conquering) the world!

Constantly. MMO's are MADE of patches.

There was a patch on release day before it went live. EVERYBODY has to download patches.

Handy for a secondary/backup connection maybe.

I browse more than 10gb of websites in a month, let alone reading comics and watching TV online and MMO's.

Well, I'm all patched up (unless they release new patches today). Only had to download 6 GB worth.

After I get home from work (and doing grocery shopping and grabbing dinner) I will be online.

Darkness Falls U.S. server yes?

I will try out my dual-pistol wielding flying tech guy. I was going to originally do acrobatics but found flying easier when doing the beta.

Sweet! Yeah, ZenBubble & I are on Darkness Falls US server exclusively at this point & Grenge said he had Miss Mayhem on DF.

My characters so far are all heroes:
* Gaia (girl) L6
* Kismet (girl) L6
* Sensor (guy) L3
* xombiekitty (girl) L11
* XS (girl) L15

ZenBubble's characters so far are also all heroes:
* The Maxx (guy) L3
* PhoenixDarkDirk (guy) L3
* Victoria (girl) L3
* Wulf (guy) L3
* ZenBubble (girl) L10

Can you tell which one of us has been spending far too much time playing? Laughing

We'll probably try to organise voice chat through Skype since the in game voice chat hasn't worked for either of us yet, and the text chat is a pain to use.

ZenBubble said he might make up a new character tonight, so we'll have to let you know what names to look for later on Very Happy

Anestis - Which Mentor were you going to choose?

That determines which city you start in, and some of the missions you get.

I'm thinking I'll spec up a new character tonight before we team up.

SuperWannabe, we have a phone line here purely for allowing a net connection.
We don't even have a phone on the line (we can't get naked ADSL out here).
I don't know if you can get naked ADSL where you live (& can therefore avoid a phone line rental cost), and I wouldn't normally recommend a phone company as an ISP, but in trying to help you not pay $50 a month for 10 gig, here is a link that might interest you.
http://tinyurl.com/optus120g
For $64.94 you get 120g a month plus phone line rental & $30 worth of calls included (which wouldn't matter if you don't have a phone but is a bonus if you do).
Look, do whatever is right for you, but it kills me that you're paying so much for 10g a month.
There are plenty of better deals than the one I've posted, out there, but I picked one as an example that used one of the big telcos.
You could still play using your 10g connection if you bought the game & only did the patches.
Your connection would take a hit the first month but should be fine after that.
Anyway, just trying to be helpful, not pushy, so I'll shut up now, lol Very Happy

I'm with iiNet, and whilst I have a Business Plan, they have home Naked ADSL plans:

Naked Home-1: 50GB Peak + 50GB offPeak ADSL2+ Speeds - $59.95

http://www.iinet.net.au/naked-dsl/plans.html

If you can't get NakedDSL, they have normal DSL plans:

ADSL2+ Home-2: 100GB Peak + 100GB Off peak ADSL2+ Speeds - $49.95
