What are your music tastes?

Post by sirfluffington on Wed Feb 17, 2010 9:13 am

So I was browsing this thread and a) noticed there was nothing in it and b) had this flash of thought, what exactly is geeky music?

I find it hard to believe that we have a 'type' but what better way to find out than to ask on here?

I'll start: I love a diverse range of pop, contemporary country, world and instrumental music.

How about you?

There is definitely music out there that I would call geeky, such as Weird Al Yankovic, Tripod, Transvision Vamp, etc, but people that are music geeks tend to like all kinds of music.

For anyone that is ever wondering if something fits the bill, keep in mind that geekery equals passion Smile It doesn't have to be what the non-geeky people of the world would consider geeky... it just needs to be something you're passionate about!

I am also a lover of a wide range of music and I would consider myself a bit of a music geek because I love listening to it, get hyped going to live gigs even when it's the first time seeing a band play, and tend to know the strangest bits of trivia about bands even when I'm not a fan of their music Smile Let's just say that Spicks and Specks is a big hit in this household Very Happy

I enjoy rock, trance, blues, dance, classical, instrumental, industrial, alternative, metal, punk, pop, goth, grunge, ska, ballads, r&b, rap, jazz, comedy, c&w etc... pretty much a bit of everything! I'm just one of those people that likes it when the world has a soundtrack Smile

well based on my knowledge of fellow geeks (hardly scientific but work with me here); I reckon we are more likely to have a diverse range of musical tastes. Or maybe that's just me ! Bring me Kylie or KMFDM, it's all good.

I love all types of music (apart from c&w) - my tastes range from ABBA to Voltaire. Being a 70's child, my earliest musical memories were of Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand - and I was brought up with Mario Lanza and other operatic giants of the time so music was and still is an important part of my life Smile

So does the Mashup count as a musical style? At least its honest enough to admit there is little new under the sun and is openly recycling music. There are some great Mashup podcasts in iTunes ATM. there is something rather spooky when Pink Floyd is played under C+C Music Factory.

I would count musical mash-ups as a style.
There are some fantastic mash-ups out there... and some terrible ones too, lol.
Have you seen http://www.mashup-charts.com ?

Just got my hands on a Colin Hay CD. It's an older one, but for my generation... it's cool. Some of his classic songs, acoustic style.

I'm also a fan of any sort of music as long as it is good, except for R&B.

I'm a big fan of the band The Mercy Bell (aka Eat The Menu),
As well as Butterfly Boucher, Lovers Electric, Sixpence None The Richer, Smashing Pumpkins.

I also a huge fan of Dr Horribles Sing Along Blog & the music. I think I have seen it almost 50 times.

Lately I've been on a serious Daft Punk kick.

Youtube: Daft Punk - Da Funk (AKA Big City Nights)

Did everybody know that they're doing the soundtrack for Tron Legacy?

Monique Brumby has some great stuff

Another local lass that I love is Coby Grant.
Saw her perform live at a pub while waiting to go to a TV show taping and she was just awesome
Left after purchasing one of each of the DVDs and CDs she had on sale!
Also signed up to her mailing list and enjoy seeing her career grow

Actually, I really enjoy buying CDs from buskers and discovering artists I may not find by other means.
Have done this a few times in both Melbourne and Sydney now.

How's this for something different;

Is anybody else her a fan of Philip Glass' Koyaanisqatsi Soundtrack?

I've always used this album when I need to block out the world. Gimme an mp3 player, this album, and a set of headphones and I can hide almost anywhere.

"Eclectic" is an understatement with my musical collection. I studied classical piano for 6 years and that gave me a huge interest in music beyond the pop realm and may have also contributed to my interest in film soundtracks.

Of the more contemporary stuff It's hard to pin things down. I do love a good novelty choon and some of the "Nerdcore" music that has been getting around. I've recently been introduced to Trock (Timelord Rock) and while normally not a fan of filksongs the stuff I've heard with the Trock genre has had a high level of polish.

I loves me some Kylie, some New Order, some Sister of Mercy, some Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and lots more stuff in between.

I generally avoid rap and hip-hop though Mr. B The Gentleman Rhymer has made me rethink this idea

Perhaps it's because it's Saturday night and I'm building a laptop for my 3 year old that's filled with Charlie Lola, Sesame Street, ABC Kids activities, but NIN Year Zero Remixed is going down very nicely at the moment.

throughly recommend the last couple of pop/industrial NIN releases if you need an bit of an anti-cute hit. Smile actually anything by Trent Reznor is gold in my book, so I may be a little biased.

Currently, I am really into county music, in particular Jamie O'Neal. Otherwise I am listening too albums from Abba, or the amazing Lady Gaga (who I shall see this Wednesday and it will be the first time I have seen anyone other than Peter Combe live in concert). That said, I will listen to basically anything that avoids anything hip-hop and rap related.

Like most of the people in geek society, I love just about any type of music. That doesn't mean that I like everything in every type...just the good stuff.

Currently I have My Chem Romance, Paramore, Eagles of Death Metal, The Creepshow, Reel Big Fish and Danny Elfman's Alice in Wonderland in my car's CD player. Hmm...that is a bit of a mishmash....

My favourite singer is Wendy Rule (Cyspazzz you are lucky to live in her home town...I have seen her live several times. Took my daughter one time when she was 4 years old and Wendy sang her to sleep with my daughter's favourite song, Artemis. I assume you know she has a new CD? I missed her concert here last week, so I am going to have to buy it from her site. Sigh...not signed...yet )

I did see quite a few young and pre-teens there which I just feel is irresponsible. Apart from the swearing, which although infrequent was strong, the general content and nature of her show really suits a mature audience. Oh, and the opening Semi Precious Weapons in no way could be considered appropriate. I rather liked the whole evening, although there did seem a lengthy delay between the opening act and Gaga. That said, the show clearly wanted for nothing in regards to the set design and choreography; the show even carried a story between songs, although I found it rather difficult to hear spoken words, or even lyrics if I did not already know them. Perhaps I am just getting old, I certainly left with my ears ringing. She did sing all my favourites, excluding Paper Gangster which I love but never thought she would use anyway. The stand out moments would be the opining with Dance in the Dark, the flaming paino for Speachless, the dance moves for Telephone, and Bad Romance because it just is so fantastically awesome. cheers

Well what is really geeky music....for me Stan Bush has to be up there with two of the great songs that will come from a movie soundtrack ever...Dare and You Got The Touch both from the 1984 Animated Transformers Movie which also featured Weird Al's Dare to be Stupid

Now my music taste is very diverse... Some of the music I listen to Era, Enigma, Taylor Swift, Chris LeDoux, Michael Buble and of course lots of classic Australian music.. Midnight Oil, ACDC, Crowded House, Icehouse and Dragon, these as just the tip of a very large asteroid to try and list them all would take me all day

I was so relieved to read that Darth_Sully listenes to AC/DC.

Well I want to the Petty's Orchid Festival today, mostly to see family, but also because Peter Coombe made an appearance. His material was aimed at younger children, mostly, but this was to be expected at a family event. Some of the songs I did not know as they were newer, but he did sing "Juicy, Juicy, Green Grass", "Newspaper Mamma", "Spaghetti Bolognese", "Rain Keeps Tumbling Down", and of course the Belly Flop in the Pizza one. Now at his 18+ gigs the whole audience sings along wearing newspaper hats. Here, the hats were few and far between (I wore one as I have no shame), but he did have young children singing loudly and dancing around - some were even mini-groupies trying to climb on the "stage" (bed of truck). Actually, it felt lovely seeing a young generating watching him with their parents as I know I used to be one of those kids.

At one point when he was showing hand movements to one of his songs, one little boy called out "the Wiggles", to which he received an exaggerated shocked look, before being told in a mock hurt voice that "this comes long before them".

I've been enjoying Wendy's music since 2000, when I accidently discovered her beautiful voice. She was playing around Melbourne and also working part time at The Esoteric Bookshop. I walked in and she served me after buying some books and other pieces. I saw her poster on the wall and didn't realise it was her, after pointing to the poster I asked her if that singer was any good, she said yes, and I bought her album Zero.

I listened to it on the way home and was hooked straight away. The next week I went back and bought her album Deity, she wasn't working that day and I still hadn't realised that she was the one that sold me Zero. When I payed for the CD I commented to Julie one of the owners of the shop that I listened to Wendy's first albumn last week and loved it, thats why I was back to buy her second album, and she said that Wendy worked there part time, then I realised who had sold me Zero . Since then I have been to all her CD launches and a lot of her shows, since most of them are only down the road. She's a great person, very friendly and very down to earth, but at the same time not especially in her music.

Well I have currently set aside my other albums, and now I listen primarily to the Glee soundtracks. I have volumes one, two, and three, plus the forth one pre-ordered - not to mention the Madonna one too. I also listen to two different Glee podcasts. All while I am driving or doing housework. That said, I am behind in the episodes; I am only now up to the Madonna one. Finding time to sit down and watch them does not always present itself.

Lately when I can't find anything else to listen to I just fall back on Glee.
It is funny that I cannot stand listening to Madonna doing Madonna songs, But I love the Glee versions of them. Probably because I just can't stand Madonna.
