Chaotic Geek presents... Tron: Legacy (SOLD OUT)
First topic message reminder :

Tron: Legacy is the 2010 big screen must see for proud geeks everywhere!
Tron: Legacy is a 3D action-packed adventure set in a digital world. Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), a rebellious 27-year-old, is haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his father Kevin Flynn (Oscar and Golden Globe winner Jeff Bridges), a man once known as the world's leading video-game developer. When Sam investigates a strange signal sent from the abandoned Flynn's Arcade that could have only come from his father he finds himself pulled into a world where Kevin has been trapped for 20 years. With the help of the fearless warrior Quorra (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-or-death journey across a visually-stunning digital universe -- created by Kevin himself -- which has become far more advanced with never-before-imagined vechiles, weapons, and landscapes and a ruthless villian who will stop at nothing to prevent their escape. Presented in Disney Digital 3D and scored by Grammy Award winning electronic music duo Daft Punk.
Chaotic Geek invites you to join us on December 16th to enjoy Tron: Legacy in a cinema filled with exquisitely comfy seats, perfect viewing angles, and top quality digital equipment, so strap on your 3D glasses, and get your geek groove on for the movie of the year!

Re: Chaotic Geek presents... Tron: Legacy (SOLD OUT)
Just finished watching the original to refresh my memory of the story (I've got one of the old Laserdisc collector editions). Dear lord, I'm old enough to remember when that kind of computer graphics attracted awed silence from geeks.... (hell, back then just getting colour was an achievement!) Hopefully a blu-ray will be released of the original as the old NTSC laserdisc doesn't upscale well to HD.
Hopefully the powers-that-be can get the sequel to The Last Starfighter off the ground too...

A GIANT HUGE thankyou to all the organizers / sponsors for last nights event. It was truly amazing.
The film was amazing...I loved everything about it. Will go see it again 3-4 times next week.
There is nothing like the experience of seeing it with the fans. Tron legacy is a worthy sequel.
I don't understand how this morning I read a barrage of completely negative comments about it on FB (from non "TRUE" Tron fans so they don't count in my opinion. :-)
I can't wait to be able to pre order it on amazon!! Still looking for the Daft Punk music track locally though to no avail.
Special thankyou to Lyn xombie who was the liaison here for us.
You are all THE BEST!!!

Re: Chaotic Geek presents... Tron: Legacy (SOLD OUT)
May I also say a HUGE THANK YOU and HUGS to Lynn and ChatoicGeek for everything!
The movie, the swag, and the company! It was completely awesome.
The only down part of the evening is when a server in the Director's Suite thought the Megamind 3D glasses pouch was rubbish and took it away and threw it in the trash! *Boo Hiss*!.
Oh, those negative reviewers, they are probably not tue fans of TRON, or they are purists or extremists and "How dare they expand on the original. Sacrilege".
*ptooey* I spit on them.

Re: Chaotic Geek presents... Tron: Legacy (SOLD OUT)
I agree 100% Anestis. They are not proper fans so I don't care what they say. The problem is that other reviewers have canned it. Idiots like Schembri. I hope it does well enough that they do a sequel.
I spit on those negative reviews as well.
We Tron fans ADORED IT.
I am surprised there are no toys out there yet.
Another friend I know who could not make it to the Director Suite meeting but went to a later screening yesterday (ie a TRUE fan) has nothing but praise for it.
Now I just need some Tron merch. I also found the supplier of the special lighting tape they used on the costumes as I want to put some on my black Jacket on the edging. It can be powered with a 9V battery. WOOT!!!

Here is the link to the Tron Guy review.

I still say GOOD on him!! I'd like to shake his hand!
I have to say I shared his emotional state. I had tears during the intro sequence and the end credits. I'm not ashamed to say it one bit.

Thank you for the lovely feedback guys
Chris & I are so glad you all had a wonderful time
The two of us have been knocking ourselves out on this event for months and really appreciate hearing how much you all loved it
We supplied a third of the swag ourselves, and then sourced the rest through the generosity of our sponsors, so please feel free to let us know any feedback you'd like us to pass on to them, including Disney themselves who arranged delivery on the glow-in-the-dark wristbands in under 21 hours of me first seeing them & mentioning how cool they'd be for all of you!
Thank you to each of you for coming along & making the night so much fun!
It was great to catch up with friends, as well as make new ones
Here's hoping that Tron Legacy does awesome numbers and we get the rest of the franchise heading our way!!!

Re: Chaotic Geek presents... Tron: Legacy (SOLD OUT)
I splurged and downloaded the soundtrack this evening and have been listening to it. It's odd, but in a good way. There's nods to themes from the original, some stuff that sounds very Hans Zimmer-esque and some other that reminds me of the original Terminator theme.
But I'm liking it. Definitely have to see this again.

Re: Chaotic Geek presents... Tron: Legacy (SOLD OUT)
I've been looking around at reviews of TRON Legacy by filmgoers and the amount of negativity amazes me:
Young Kevin Flynn looked rubbery and unreal: Well, de-ageing is new technology, whilst ageing has been around for many years now. Adding time to people is easy, with both makeup and digital effects. Taking time away, much harder.
No Plot: Were you watching the same movie I was? Hmm, let's see you come up with something better that is an organic evolution of the original movie.
Writing/Dialogue was poor: See above response re: plot and below re: Kevin Flynn' character.
Kevin Flynn was a Hippy/Zenn freak: Hmm. He was a radical free spirit in the first movie. He's pretty much been stuck in isolation inside The Grid for 20 years. He has seen his original vision corrupted. It's bound to induce some despair and some introspective.
Also, he probably hasn't done anything before Sam entered the Grid because sub-consciously he probably needed to Sam was alright, and didn't resent him for leaving. Making peace with Sam allowed him to make the final sacrifice to free the system from Clu's tyranny.
Sam: Well, he felt like he was abandoned, then finds out his father had no choice in the matter. it's bound to be a bit of a shock, but it doesn't change his fundamental character, just refines it. He knows what needs to be done, but he's young, and rash, and that causes problems for Kevin. But as the movie progresses, he grows, and we see that occurring, as well as the bond between them repairing and growing.
I think people are just not thinking about the psychological aspects of the movie and it's characters.

Re: Chaotic Geek presents... Tron: Legacy (SOLD OUT)
As a geek, its far simpler to just NOT read ANY mainstream reviews of genre films, as you will just end up pulling hair out like a few people here have. And there is little point arguing, as the arty types (+ jaded film reviewers) simply don't get it, and never will even when its rammed down their throats (ala LOTR trilogy).
As such i only read the reviews on the IGN Filmforce website, as their collective opinions tends to most closely match my own (and they thought Tron was fantastic...)

See that is why I don't watch "Professional" Reviews. Most of then went to film school and have their noses stuck so far in the air if it rains they would drown. I go with the people, which you get a good sampling of those who hate a movie, those that love and those whom find it OK. I found TRON to be a great movie, with some few predictable spots, but what movies hasn't had that. Overall,I cant wait to watch it again today.

It might be hard but it still looked crap.
Motion capture of facial expressions is hard. A CGI face of a young Alec Guinness was touted as an idea for the Star Wars prequels but abandoned when it didn't look realistic enough. The work done on Gollum for the Lord of the Rings was convincing but the face they used was a caricature not a real one. The CG faces of actors in Avatar were good but they were recreating the existing face not trying to make a new one.
Xombiekitty says that that's how Jeff Bridges actually moves his face during the recording. I've yet to see that but in comparison to the facial movements of his real face there's a huge discrepancy. I'm assuming he shaved for the scans but his real face under the beard had more expression than the digital version.
That's not to say it's a bad film. I enjoyed it. I'd go and see it again. But let's not try and gloss over it's problems.

Re: Chaotic Geek presents... Tron: Legacy (SOLD OUT)
From what I heard, the techs involved with Avatar (at weta digital and elsewhere) pretty much invented on-the-spot the software they used for facial tracking (dynamically tracking expresions during recording using dots on the actors faces). Its possible that the Disney crew didn't want to license this or didn't know about it and went their own way, hence the different results...

Re: Chaotic Geek presents... Tron: Legacy (SOLD OUT)
For the footage regarding Jeff's work with the de-aging tech, check out:
3:44 - 4:05 for head-gear being worn in scene blocking
4:55 - 5:08 for head gear closer-up
5:09 - 5:23 for recording expressions
The make of 3D cameras used in Tron Legacy were the ones used for Avatar, but actually advanced upon, which is why it's a submersive 3D feel with even less pop-up book to it than Avatar.
As for the expression capturing, you can see the head gear in action, dots and all, on set, with follow up capturing in the booth, in the vid above.

Thanks for the clip. That one hadn't come up in my search the other night. I'd say the changes have probably come through when they've smoothed lines out but they've also removed some of the elasticity of the skin in the process. Kenny Rogers he's not.
My opinion is that it's the rendering of the mouth that's thrown it off. But until I see it again I can't say for sure.

Re: Chaotic Geek presents... Tron: Legacy (SOLD OUT)
I just saw it again in the cinema and specifically watched the mouth on young Flynn. It looks fine. Remember he is SUPPOSED to be a program.
When young Flynn is in the real world, the mouth looked fine at the start.
I'll tell you the disappointment, the Toy Deluxe Identity disc. There is no mode to keep the lights ON which I would have thought was an OBVIOUS option. Sure it would drain the batteries but there should have still been an option for that. I love the fact they are $15US and $40AUD when the exchange rate is 1:1. :-)
